Well after Ava and Jake had croup about 2 weeks ago we thought we were in the clear and managed to keep Reagan from catching it, but no such luck. Out of nowhere on Wednesday night she woke up around 2AM coughing with that distinct croupy cough. We tried to get her back to sleep, then around 4 she was up again and sounded awful and like she was having a hard time breathing. We called the night nurse at her Pediatrician's office and she told us to bring her to the ER. So I took her to the ER and about 3 hours later they said yes it's croup, gave her an oral steroid to reduce the swelling in her throat and sent us on our way. The rest of the day was pretty much the same, coughing and sounding raspy when she breathed. Then Thursday came around and she sounded awful. They had said to steam up the bathroom and sit with her in there and also to stand her in front of the freezer to let her breathe in the cold air. That had been helping a lot but around noon on Thursday nothing was helping and she was having an awful time breathing. I didn't know if I should call 911. She had an appt at the doctor to check on her after the ER visit, so I just drove to the Pediatrician to see if they could see her earlier. Of course I was crying and panicked, they checked her oxygen levels right away and the doctor came in about 1 minute later, took a quick look at her and had her admitted to the hospital. She was getting enough oxygen even with her rough breathing so they said I would be able to drive over, so we hopped back in the car and went to the hospital. They were so great there, they had her admitted in no time at all. Within the hospital there is a children's hospital, it was so awesome having nurses and doctors who only work with babies/children.
Poor baby girl :( She finally passed out and took lots of naps while we were there.
After her first round of IV steroids she already perked up and was breathing so much easier.
They had lots of toys for her to play with, and even had a person on staff that just walked around trying to make kids happy. She had different music activity things on an iPad and bubbles and toys. She came in when Reagan's IV was being done but she was not amused at all.
She was released about 22 hours later, she was like a new person. She has been sleeping a lot since she got home, Friday night she slept almost 16 hours (she had 1 cup of milk at night). And before that 16 hour stretch she had taken a 3 hour nap, and was only up for an hour before she went back down for the night. Being sick definitely took a lot out of her. She's still not 100% but she's looking a lot better as you can see here!
